Joué durant  5 mois 2 semaines

Chorégraphe: Jason Pennycooke •
Avec: Cynthia Erivo (Leila), Jason Denton (David), Anna Mateo (Consuelo), Stewart Charlesworth (Mike), Leon Lopez (Dewain), Natasha J. Barnes (Tiffany), Colin Ryan (Rick)

Commentaire: John Adams is the minimalist composer best known for his operas “Nixon in China” and “The Death of Klinghoffer”. This “musical” is a mixture of song-cycle, opera, blues, rock, gospel and funk and is performed with no dialogue. It was first staged in May 1995 in Berkeley, California, and its title is based on a comment by one of the survivors. This was a joint production between the Barbican and the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. The critics were divided on whether this was an opera or a musical, and whether it belonged in a concert-hall rather than a theatre. However, there was much praise for the performers.  (plus)

Commentaire: Originally staged as a try-out at Stratford East in April 2004, this was Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labours Lost” rewritten as a feel-good ska/reggae musical. A completely re-written version was staged at Stratford East for three weeks in February 2005 and, thanks to impresario Bill Kenwright, it transferred and was acclaimed as the first British black musical.  (plus)

Avec: Bogdan Kominowski (Don José/Zorro), Andrew Secombe (Governor Maté), Toni Palmer (Maria), Michael N. Hamour (Pirate Lafitte), Sylvester McCoy (Bernardo), Gary Lyons, Siobhan McCarthy

Commentaire: This was a mixture of folk-opera and political pantomime, making heavy use of zarzuela music (a kind of traditional comic Spanish operetta) by 19th century Spanish composers. Ken Hill had been fighting cancer for several years and sadly died during rehearsals for this show.  (plus)

Commentaire: With yodelling lederhosen-clad chorus boys, and fluffy rabbits and squirrels swaying in the trees, singing along to the music of 19th Century opera composer Carl Zeller and new lyrics by Ken Hill, this was a pantomime-type romp (similar in style to Ken Hill’s “Phantom of the Opera” - the pre-Lloyd Webber version.)  (plus)

Première: 22 October 1990
Dernière: 24 November 1990

Fait partie de: London Run

Compositeur: Louis Jordan •
Parolier: Louis Jordan •
Libettiste: Clarke Peters •

Avec: Clarke Peters (Four Eyed Moe - Stratford), C. Derricks-Carroll (Four Eyed Moe - Lyric), Kenny Andrews (Big Moe), Paul J. Medford (Little Moe), Peter Alex Newton (No Moe), Omar Okai {Eat Moe), Dig Wayne (Nomax)

Commentaire: Paulette Randall was credited as director at Stratford, but when the show came to London her name had disappeared and the Charles Augins was credited as Director-Choreographer. The show involved audience participation, with the audience invited to join a conga line through the auditorium during the intervals and out into the street after the show. Under the slogan “The Joint Never Stops Jumpin’” this was a long-running success. In April 1992 it was re-created on Broadway for a year’s run and 445 performances.  (plus)
